The Shrewd Madness of Crisis Leadership

There is an interesting discussion brewing about the nature of Silicon Valley companies. Are they "tech" companies, as Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo asserts, or are they "... companies in other industries that happen to make heavy use of technology," as CBS Money Watch blogger Erik Sherman says? The gentlemanly disagreement started over the appointment of P...

The Dawn of a New Computing Era

Like every other Consumer Electronics Show (CES) I've attended, CES 2012 was one of the weirder, more ephemeral, and most compelling technology events of the season. Weird because since CES acts as an essentially level playing field for both the ridiculous and sublime, you can literally demo a pricey next-gen OLED TV while a couple of dozen feet away vendors are hawking bulk wiring harnesses, electrical connectors and gizmos of every kind. Ephemeral since so many of the products and "trends" being pimped by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), which runs the show, and attending vendors end up going nowhere but down the memory toilet.

Prior to serving as the federal government's first CIO, Kundra held...

US Cautions on 'Boot Up' Cyberthreat

The routine is almost universal. Every day, millions of workers turn on their computers, take a second or two for a sip of coffee as their desktop or laptop "boots up," and then get to work. In those few seconds, the basic input-output system (BIOS) of the computer loads the protocols that actually run the PC -- in effect, acting the same as the shot of coffee that helps the worker wake up and start functioning. Pretty simple...

Website Scaling, Part 1: What It Means and How to Get There

The stories of websites that fell over and died when they got unexpected traffic are legion. A recent example of what not to do would be Target's introduction of a low-priced Missoni collection. The site attracted so much traffic that Target.com was swamped for several hours on Sept. 13, 2011, leading would-be shoppers to face a cute but frustrating site-down page...

The Future According to CES

One of the things that unfortunately doesn't happen much since Bill Gates stepped down is a quintessential talk on what the future will look like, and I find I miss that. So, to fill my own need for such a talk, this week's column will focus on the interesting products I saw come out at CES and the future they represent. I'll close with my pr...

RIM PlayBook Takes Security Body Blow

If there were ever a mobile device that could not handle another blow, it would be Research In Motion's tablet device, the PlayBook. The BlackBerry's typical user works in the government and corporate environment, where security is essential. PlayBook users -- while much smaller in number -- have similar needs. News has emerged of a vulnerability ...

ICANN gTLD Machine Grinds Into Action

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) began accepting applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) at one minute past midnight on Thursday. This is a major change for the Internet as we know it. The new gTLD program will expand the current selection of top-level domains such as .com, .org and .net to include almost any word. The change will also allow non-Latin language scripts like Arabic and Chinese to be used in a gTLD...

SOPA Opponents Aim to Mobilize Grass Roots Protest

SOPA opponents -- that is, the people and organizations lining up against the Stop Online Piracy Act -- clearly still have their work cut out for them. At the same time, there are signs that the massive protest against the bill is having some effect. The bill's chief sponsor, U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, suggested in an interview published Thur...
